Napoleon on the battlefield of Eylau, 9 February 1807

Vignette
The battle of Eylau against the Russians, who retreated in good order, was immediately claimed as a French victory by Napoleon. He ordered a competition for a commemorative painting, with very precise specifications. Some thirty artists put themselves forward, including Meynier, and it was Gros who won the commission (his painting is in the Louvre Museum).
