François-René, Viscount of Chateaubriand (1768-1848)

The writer had his first successes under the Consulate, but refused to serve the imperial regime after the execution of the Duke d'Enghien. He was nevertheless accepted by Napoleon, who facilitated his entrance to the Institute in 1811. When he saw this portrait in the Salon, the Emperor declared: "He looks like a conspirator coming down the chimney".
