Bonaparte, First Consul, crossing the Grand St. Bernard, 20 May 1800

This portrait by David is the most emblematic image of Bonaparte the warlord, who would have asked to be shown "calm on a spirited horse". He fixed his image as the hero of modern times, heir to the great figures of the past, such as Hannibal and Charlemagne, who had crossed the Alps before him, and whose names were engraved in the rock at his feet.
