Battle of the Pyramids, 21 July 1798

Vignette
The first major encounter of the campaign took place on 21 July, near the mythical site of the Pyramids of Giza, from which it takes its name. The French army succeeded in dispersing six thousand Mamluks, of which a quarter were killed or drowned in the Nile. The battle opened the gates of Cairo, then the whole of Egypt, to Bonaparte.
